The Surrey Advertiser was first printed on the 2nd of April 1864.
The paper was published by J W Barfoot, who also owned a decorating and furniture warehouse, all these and other
interests were run from 10 High Street, Guildford.
The paper was printed by Joseph Billing, who traded at Railway Esplinade, Guildford. It is still possible to see his name
at the Billings, near the Station
At first published Monthly, by July it was sold every two weeks. In August Publication was weekly
It would seem that some conflict existed between, Mr Barfoot and The West Surrey Times.
There is evidence that in some areas, the Surrey Advertiser was not easy to obtain.
By the end of 1864 the paper had increased in size, and popularity had grown.
During 1865 staff were taken on including a person to run the paper.
On the 7th of October 1865, the paper was printed for the first time, by Mr Barfoot at 10 High Street
Now under the ownership of Angus Fraser Wallbrook and Alexander Forsythe Asher, the Surrey Advertiser expanded.
By 1872 the paper had incorporated The Berkshire Standard, West Middlesex Herald, and The Kingston Gazette
The edition of 12th October 1872, carried the news that Joseph Whittaker Barfoot had died at Yeovill on 30th September, aged 54.
On the 26th October 1872, printing was moved to the new premises in Market Street
